Next generation data centres provide the foundation for rapid server spin-up, the ability to move virtual machines around with ease and elastic resource allocation.
From a technical perspective, next-generation data centres are architected around the industry’s gold standard in software-defined network architecture – Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN) with Ethernet Virtual Private Network (EVPN). This is the newest industry standard for data centre fabrics, accepted by the Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF), and used by the largest public cloud providers.
VXLAN with EVPN goes far beyond application or server virtualisation, and provides an overlay to the entire network which allows workloads to be shared across different nodes or data centres.
That’s great, but how do you know if it’s right for you?
Next-generation data centres aren’t necessarily for everyone – smaller organisations with fewer regulatory compliance and performance requirements, lower workloads or a less geographically dispersed workforce may find older data centre architectures work just fine.
However, your organisation might find that a next generation data centre is right for you if:
Your organisation relies on high performance and availability.
Your organisation has 500+ people accessing network services.
Your organisation needs geographically distributed workloads and/or “follow the sun” staffing models.
If your organisation meets the above three criteria, it is likely your company could benefit from a next-generation data centre.
If you decide to that a next gen data centre is for you, what’s next? You will most likely need to invest in new networking hardware. Software defined networking (somewhat counterintuitively) requires hardware acceleration for best performance. So, it makes sense to look at your whole network platform and master strategy while re-evaluating your data centre approach.
Next generation data centres give you the flexibility to run your applications in your own private data centre, or AC3’s tightly controlled cloud infrastructure, or other public cloud providers… or any combination of the three. This allows you to develop a solution that’s right according to your needs and regulatory compliance requirements.
